GPA Calculator. How to Calculate Semester & Cumulative GPA (Quick Guide)
Make the most of your grades with a fast, accurate UF GPA calculator. This short guide explains how to use a semester GPA calculator and cumulative GPA calculator, shows a worked example, and explains the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA. Use this with the UnitFlow tool:
What this UF GPA calculator does
Computes semester GPA from grades and credit hours.
Computes cumulative GPA when you add previous GPA and credits.
Supports weighted (honors/AP/weight added) and unweighted (standard 4.0 scale) modes.
Can show “what-if” / target GPA scenarios so you know what grades you need next term.
How to calculate GPA? the simple formula
Convert each course grade to grade points (for a 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B = 3.0, etc.).
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours → this gives grade points per course.
Add all grade points.
- Divide total grade points by total credit hours.
Formula:
GPA = (Sum of (grade_point × credit_hours)) ÷ (Sum of credit_hours)

Worked example
Suppose you took three courses this semester:
Course 1: 4.0 (A) × 3 credits = 12.0 grade points
Course 2: 3.0 (B) × 4 credits = 12.0 grade points
- Course 3: 3.7 (A-) × 2 credits = 7.4 grade points
Total grade points = 12.0 + 12.0 + 7.4 = 31.4
Total credits = 3 + 4 + 2 = 9
GPA = 31.4 ÷ 9 = 3.4889 → rounded to 3.49
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA. what’s the difference?
- Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale for every course. It treats an A in any course as 4.0.
- Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses (AP, IB, honors). Example: an A in an AP course might be 5.0 instead of 4.0 on a 5.0 weighted scale.
Use unweighted for a simple comparison across students. Use weighted if your school reports weighted GPAs and you want an accurate reflection of course difficulty.
FAQ
Q: Do I need to include failed courses?
A: Yes! include any course that counts toward your credits (failed courses usually count with the grade given, which lowers GPA).
Q: Can this calculator convert percentage to GPA?
A: Many calculators let you choose a grading scale or convert percentages to grade points; check the scale options on the tool.
Q: Is weighted GPA always better?
A: Weighted GPA shows course difficulty and can raise your reported GPA if you take honors/AP classes, but universities interpret weighted vs unweighted differently, always check admissions rules.
